Hi everyone!

Todays post is going to be a different one!

As you may know, i have completed a Diploma of Specialist Makeup course. I wanted to do this course as i have an intense love for special effects and i knew it was included in the course! However, the course i completed really only went over the basics. I would recommend anyone interested in doing makeup, to look online and watch YouTube videos! Its FREE and you can practice in your own home!

I didn't know if i wanted to add anything to do with special effects to my blog, but i have decided that i will! I think Halloween time may have helped my decision!

I was planning to keep this blog strictly beauty makeup, but i love both! Hopefully some people enjoy my special effects posts, though i understand they are not for everyone! I will always put a warning on the top to prepare those who are squimish!

I am in NO way saying i'm a professional, because i'm still learning aswell and there is so much stuff im excited to learn more about! But i want to show you guys what ive learnt along the way, and show some recreations of looks i have come across! If i recreate a look, i will ALWAYS credit the artist!

Today i thought i would start off with a latex hand prop i created! There are so many ways to create one, and so many variations on colour and overall look!

What you need:

-Liquid latex

-Loose powder/baby powder

-hairdryer (optional)

-cotton balls

-kebab sticks

-cream colours/alcohol activated colours

-stipple sponge/disposable sponge

-spatter brush (optional)

-acrylic nails

-thick blood

-dark blood

I made this latex hand prop by layering my own hand in around 12 layers of liquid latex! The amount of layers you do will depend on how thick the latex is and how thick you apply each layer. You have to keep your hand VERY still while doing this, to ensure the latex doesn't stick to itself as it dries. I suggest powdering each layer and hair drying every layer as you go. I learnt the hard way and forgot to powder each layer and soon established that the sponge with the latex on it will also stick to your latex hand!

Once you have what looks like a prosthetic hand, and it feels quite thick, its time to remove it. The best way is to remove it by slowly pulling it inside out, remembering to powder the latex as you go as it will stick to itself!

After that its time to fill it!

I filled mine with pulled apart cotton balls, but you can use whatever you like. I also added 'kebab sticks' to the inside, and maneuver the cotton to sit around it so you can feel the sticks when holding the hand. They will feel like bones!

Once i had filled the entire latex glove with cotton, i poured a fair amount of latex into the top, and adjusted the soaked cotton to sit 'chunky' looking, to give the illusion of meaty flesh! I left it to dry for 24 hours, then painted it!

I recently learnt that before painting latex, its best to use a sealer. This stops the latex from soaking up all the colour! I had this problem for so long before i was told about the sealer! Its a lifesaver!

I would suggest using alcohol activated paints, as i have played with these a bit and they are amazing! Though i don't own any of my own at the moment, so i used a cream concealer wheel instead. I mixed the concealer creams with alcohol, though it wasnt easy to work with at all! I painted the hand using a stipple sponge, and splatter brush to adjust the colour. I added a range of blues, pinks, reds and skin tones to create the most realistic look i could. It definitely pays to have an alcohol activated palette for this as you can adjust how deep or diluted you want the colours!

Next step is to use some sort of fake acrylic nails, you can buy a pack from most shops these days! I just went with basic plain ones i had lying around, shaped them and painted them! Last step is to add your blood! I chose to layer both thick blood and dark blood, to add some dimension!

I hope you guys find this somewhat interesting! It is so perfect for halloween coming up!

Thank you for reading!
